Steve Jobs

Después de un parón de unas cuantas semanas para acostumbrarme de nuevo a la vida de estudiante, vuelvo cargada con un montón de películas. Había dejado varias sin comentar la última semana que publiqué así que vamos con la primera de ellas: Steve Jobs.

Dirigida por Danny Boyle e interpretada por Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet, Seth Rogen es un biopic sobre el  prestigioso fundador de Apple que da nombre a la película Steve Jobs, centrado en el lanzamiento de tres importantes productos de la marca. A lo largo de la película, podemos observar las difíciles relaciones que gobiernan tanto la vida pública como la vida privada de este genio.

Creo que la película sí que refleja la complejidad de la personalidad de Steve Jobs y las difíciles relaciones que tenía con las personas de su entorno. Las interpretaciones son excelentes, y el guion tampoco es precisamente malo. Aun así, hubo algo que no me convenció, que no me entretuvo del todo, que no la alzan en mi valoración como la película que creía que sería…

La valoro con un 5 porque sin llegar a ser aburrida ni mala, me decepcionó bastante.

I’ve been absent for a while because i was getting used to living as a student again after such a long time! So I’m full of new movies to review. I’m starting with Steve Jobs.

This film was directed by Danny Boyle and the cast was composed by Michael Fassbender (Academy Award nominee for this movie), Kate Winslet (also nominee)... Steve Jobs is a biopic about the famous founder of Apple. The movie is focus on three different moments of his life: three different product launches of the famous brand Apple. All along the movie we can see that he was a very clever guy but his relationships were very complicated because of him, though.

I think the movie does an excellent job in showing his complex personality and his difficult relationship with people around him. The cast give awesome performs as well, and the script is not that bad. Still, I don’t like much; it wasn’t what I expect it was going to be, so I felt a bit disappointed and this feeling I’m certainly sure is affecting my opinion.

So I’d say it is just 5, because even though is not boring or bad, or whatever, I was expecting something better, or at least different.

Carol

La película protagonista de la sesión de cine del jueves por la noche fue Carol, dirigida por Todd Haynes y con un elenco de actores bastante destacable como Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Sarah Paulson, Kyle Chandler o Jake Lacy.

Carol está ambientada en el Nueva York de los años 50, donde Therese Belivet trabaja como dependiente de una tienda de juguetes donde conoce a Carol Aird, una mujer elegante y sofisticada. Ambas crean un vínculo especial desde el primer día. Theresa tiene un novio con el que parece no querer comprometerse y Carol vive en un matrimonio infeliz y roto. Ambas deciden realizar un viaje por carretera a través de diferentes estados. Durante ese viaje, la atracción entre ambas mujeres acaba por consumarse. Pero todo cambia cuando el marido de Carol se entera de esa relación y pretende quitarle a custodia de su hija. Entonces Carol debe tomar una difícil decisión, renunciar al amor de una hija, o de un amor verdadero.

Es una película con un argumento interesante, muy bien ambientada y con unas interpretaciones soberbias (me encanta Cate Blanchett ). Quizás a veces el ritmo es un poco lento pero no me resultó ni pesada ni aburrida. Si tuviera que definirla con una palabra sería sutil.  

Diría que está a caballo entre el 6,75 y el 7.

The movie I watched last week during my weekly cinema session on Thursday night was Carol, directed by Todd Haynes. This movie has a great cast formed by Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Sarah Paulson, Kyle Chandler or Jake Lazy among others.

Carol is set in the 50’s in NY City. Therese Belivet is a young woman who works as salesperson in a toy store where she meets Carol Aird, a smart and chic woman. They both create a special link from the very first day. Therese has a kind-of-boyfriend with whom she doesn’t want to engage and Carol is living in an unhappy and broken marriage. They decide to make a Christmas journey together through some different States. During this journey, their attraction is just increasing until they consummate it. But everything changes when Carol’s husband finds out about this homosexual and extramarital relationship and he threatens to lose her child. So she has to make an important decision whether giving up on her child’s love or her true love.

I liked the plot very much, I liked the settings and also I did like the cast, (Cate Blanchett is magnificent). At some points the movie could be too slow but it wasn’t boring or tiresome though. If I have to describe it with just one single word, that one would be delicate. Great movie.

I’d say it is between 6,75 and 7. 

El reino de Dunark/ The Shamer's daughter

Vamos a empezar la semana con una dosis de ciencia-ficción. El reino de Dunark es una película danesa dirigida por Kenneth Kainz perteneciente al género fantástico.

Dina es una niña que ha heredado los poderes de su madre como escrutadora. Este poder consiste en mirar a alguien a los ojos y ver quiénes son en realidad, los secretos que ocultan. Dina es llamada al reino de Dunark cuando el heredero al trono es acusado de matar a su familia. Sin embargo, el don de la niña le permitirá ver que todo es un engaño de su hermanastro para hacerse con el trono y debe ayudar al verdadero heredero a escapar y lograr que el pueblo vuelva a favorecerle a él y no a su terrible hermano.

Es una película con una trama bastante simple, no hay grandes sorpresas, se ve a la legua qué va a ocurrir en todo momento. Se abusa demasiado de los planos de los ojos de la niña, que sí, son muy bonitos, pero esa mirada de loca a la cuarta vez, resulta cansina. No es demasiado larga la película, apenas supera la hora y media de duración, pero sinceramente, me pareció eterna.

Es un 4.

Let’s start the week with a Sci-fi dose.  Skammerens datter in Danish or The shamer’s daughter in English is a Danish movie directed by Kenneth Kainz.

Dina is a young girl who has inherited her mother’s powers as shamer. This power consists in looking at someone in the eye and seeing who they really are and their deepest and worst secrets and making them feel ashamed of them.  Dina is asked to go to the kingdom of Dunark when the heir is accused of having killed his own family. However, her gift makes her see that the heir is not guilty but his half-brother. So she should help him to escape and convince the people to support the heir again.

The plot is quite simple as you can see; there are not big surprises at all. It’s as plain as the nose on your face what is going to happen. They abuse too much of the foreground, especially with Dina’s eyes. They are bright and beautiful but eventually that mad look turns out to be wearying. The movie barely is 90 minutes long but honestly, I thought it was more than three hours long instead. I wouldn’t recommend it ever.

I’m giving it 4 points. 

The boy

Acabamos la semana con la última película de la semana pasada. Se trata de The boy,dirigida por William Brent Well, una película a la que llegué por casualidad hace unos meses al ver el tráiler. Conocía a varios actores que aparecían en ella y era una película que en su momento pensé que era miedo/terror.

El argumento es bastante sencillo. Greta (Lauren Cohan) es una joven americana que llega a Inglaterra en busca de una nueva vida lejos de su ex novio Cole (Ben Robson), que la maltrataba. Para empezar esta nueva vida, decide empezar trabajando en una casa de campo inglesa lejos de todo contacto con la sociedad, cuidando a un niño llamado Brahms mientras sus padres se toman unas vacaciones. Pero Brahms no resulta ser la clase de niño que Greta esperaba que fuera, sino más bien un recuerdo para sus padres en la forma de un muñeco consentido. El trabajo de Greta es sencillo: seguir una serie de indicaciones para que Brahms esté contento. Pero  a Greta le parece ridículo llevar a cabo tales tareas para cuidar a un muñeco y no las cumple hasta que empiezan a ocurrir cosas extrañas en la casa y se da cuenta de que quizá, el muñeco no sea tan inocente como parece ser.

No tenía grandes expectativas sobre la película a decir verdad, pero me ha sorprendido. Creo que hay películas con mucha más publicidad que esta que no merecen tanto la pena. Sin ser especialmente novedosa, ni terrorífica (soy muy miedica y pude verla sola perfectamente), tiene una trama que permanece interesante y varios sustos bastante buenos. Quizás el final es lo peor de toda ella, aunque reconozco que no me lo esperaba.

En cualquier caso, la valoro con un 5,25.

Let’s finish the week with the last movie I watched last week. It’s The boy, directed by William Brent Well. I came across it few months ago on the internet and I watched the trailer. I knew some of the members of the cast, the plot was not so bad and I liked the genre so put it immediately on my list.

The plot is quite simple: Greta (Lauren Cohan) is young American girl who arrives at England seeking a new life far away from her ex-boyfriend Cole (Ben Robson) who abused her. In this new life she is working babysitting a boy named Brahms in a lonely house on the English countryside while his parents go on vacation. But the boy is not the kind of boy that Greta was expecting to be but a faraway memory of a young son in a porcelain doll’s body. Greta’s chores are easy: follow the instructions in order to keep Brahms happy. But for her, all these things seem to be silly and pointless; Brahms is just a doll not a real boy, so she doesn’t follow them until strange things start to happen to her and inside the house. So maybe, and just maybe the doll is not as innocent as it appears to be.

So I’d say it is 5,25. 

La decisión: en nombre del amor / The choice

Hoy traigo una nueva adaptación cinematográfica de uno de mis autores favoritos, Nicholas Sparks. Se trata de la más reciente que se ha hecho de sus libros y el título de la película es La decisión: en nombre del amor.

El argumento y la trama es muy del tipo Nicholas Sparks. Gabby es una futura médico recién llegada con una pareja estable. Travis es su vecino, un hombre al que le gusta vivir el momento sin pensar en relaciones. Pero cuando se conocen, entre ambos surge algo, como los polos opuestos que se repelen y al mismo tiempo se atraen. En seguida se enamorarán, ella abandonará a su novio con el que estaba comprometida y juntos vivirán una increíble historia de amor hasta que ella tiene un accidente de coche que la dejará en coma, algo que Travis no será capaz de perdonarse. El estado de Abby no mejora, y Travis se verá obligado a enfrentarse a la decisión más importante y dura de su vida.

Para quienes ya hemos leído a Nicholas Sparks no hay sorpresas, y la trama sigue más o menos los cánones a los que estamos acostumbrados. Eso no quiere decir que sea malo, todo lo contrario, conmigo le funciona y siempre me acaba haciendo llorar. Película no apta para quienes no les gusten las películas románticas, demasiado sensibles con final feliz.

La valoro con un 5 por la ausencia de sorpresas.

Today I’m reviewing the most recent film adaptation from one of my favorite writers, Nicholas Sparks. It’s the Choice.

The storyline and the plot are very typical of Nicholas Sparks. Gabby is a future doctor who has recently arrived at the town. She has a steady couple. On the other hand, Travis is her neighbor. A guy who loves living his life without worries and who doesn’t care about relationships. But when they finally meet, something happens between them, just like opposite poles attract each other and repel at the same time. They fall in love with each other soon, she leaves her boyfriend despite she was engaged with him.  And Gabby and Travis will live an amazing love story together until she has a terrible car accident which causes her a coma. Travis will feel responsible for it. Gabby is not getting better so finally Travis will be forced to deal with the most important and difficult choice of his entire life.

For those who have already read novels written by this author, there is nothing new, no surprises at all. He used his regular canons and we are used to it. I don’t mean that is boring, quite the contrary, it works for me and always makes me cry. But this movie is not recommendable for those who doesn’t like love, oversweet and with happy ending stories.

I’d say it is 5 this time for the lack of surprises. 

Palmeras en la nieve / Tree palms in the snow

La jornada semanal de cine nocturno tuvo sabor español la semana pasada (no acostumbro a ver mucho cine español, aunque reconozco que desde hace unos años me va gustando cada vez más). En este caso la película que vi fue Palmeras en la nieve, una adaptación cinematográfica del libro homónimo escrito por Luz Gabas.

Es una historia a doble tiempo. Por un lado, la de Clarence (Adriana Ugarte), una joven que encuentra un diario familiar del pasado y decide investigar y viajar a Guinea Ecuatorial para encontrar respuestas. Por otra parte, se narra la historia de Killian (Mario Casas) cincuenta años antes, tío de la propia Clarence y la historia que el propio diario narra desde que este llega a Guinea cuando era colonia de España hasta que logra su independencia.

La verdad es que la historia me llamaba la atención, pero había un terrible problema que me echaba para atrás cada vez que quería ver la película, Mario Casas. Me parece un actor terrible, demasiado plano, siempre igual, tal vez con filón entre el sector femenino, pero en una película de este tipo no me parece una apuesta acertada. Sin embargo el trabajo tanto de Adriana Ugarte, como de Macarena García y el de Berta Vázquez me parecen geniales. Quizá en algunas partes es demasiado lenta, y se hace larga.

Me quedo con ganas de leerme el libro en el futuro y la valoro con un 5.ç

The past weekly cinema session at home was dedicated to Spanish cinema ( I don’t watch Spanish movies very often, though I admit that it is getting better and better every time). So this time the movie was Palm trees in the snow, a film adaptation from a homonymous book written by Luz Gabas.

The plot is in two different times but both are setting on Equatorial Guinea. Firstly, Clarence (Adriana Ugarte), is a young woman who finds a family journey from the past and decides to investigate about it and travel to Equatorial Guinea where her family had worked fifty years before. On the other hand, it is told the story of Killian ( Mario Casas), Clarence’s aunt who had lived and worked there for years fifty years ago. We can see how he arrives at there when Spanish has power over there yet, how he falls in love with a native girl, and how harsh was life in there the years just before and after their independence.

The truth is that I had heard of it some time ago and  I wanted to watch it but there was a very huge inconvenient, the leader actor is Mario Casas and I’m not fond of him at all. I think he is always given the same kind of performances, he’s just good-looking guy (even if I don’t think so either) but without many skills for a dramatic career. And certainly in this very case, it was not a right choice for this character. However, I liked very much the roles of the actresses: Adriana Ugarte, Macarena García and Berta Vázquez. They looked not only stunning but they gave great performs as well. Sometimes the movie was too slow, not boring but almost and it is too much long as well.

Anyway, I would like to read the book in the future and I would say that it is 5 for it. 

Warcraft, el origen / Warcraft, the beginning

La semana pasada fui al cine para ver un estreno. Ya sabéis que me encanta ver películas en el cine, creo que una película es infinitamente mejor allí. En este caso la película que fui a ver fue Warcraft. No soy muy de juegos ni nada, pero hace unos seis meses me dijeron en que consistía la historia detrás del juego y decidí que quería verla.
Warcraft, el origen está ambientada en el imaginario mundo de Azeroth  donde humanos, elfos, enanos, brujos… viven en paz. Pero esta paz se acaba cuando un ejército de orcos guerreros consiguen entrar a este mundo para destruirlo como ya han hecho con el suyo propio gracias a las malas artes del jefe de la horda, Gul’dan (un orco brujo que utiliza fel, una sustancia verde que incrementa su poder, destruye todo a su peso, se alimenta de vida y les permitió a los orcos llegar a Azelot). La única manera de impedir su avance y que la horda completa llegue a Azelot es combatir contra ellos en una alianza capitaneada por Lothar (Travis Fimmel), el mejor guerrero del rey Llane Wrynn (Dominic Cooper).
Como no soy una aficionada al juego, mi perspectiva de la película parte de cero. No sabía mucho de la historia, ni conocía a los personajes  ni nada. Y desde ese prisma de no jugadora ni ducha en el mundo wow, creo que la película es bastante buena. No sé si ha sido fiel o no la historia original del mundo Warcraft, pero tiene sentido de principio y se sostiene bajo argumentos sólidos. A lo largo de toda la película me fue imposible no ver a Ragnar Lothbrook (personaje de Vikingos interpretado por Travis Fimmel), sus miradas y expresiones, pero creo que es difícil no pensar en él al ver esos ojos. A mí me ha gustado bastante.
La valoro con un 6,5.

Last week I went to the cinema to watch a movie. You know that I do love watching films there, I truly believe that a movie is much better there than anywhere else. In this case, the movie I had chosen was Warcraft. I’m not very fond of games, but six months ago I was told about this release and I liked the plot so I decided I wanted to watch it.
Warcraft, the beginning, is set on the imaginary world of Azeroth where humans, elves, dwarves, and wizards live in peace. But this peaceful world is shacked when a group of warrior orcs go through it to destroy it as they have already done with theirs because of the tricks of Gul’dan, the leader of the horde. This Gul’dan uses fel, a magic green substance which can make increase someone’s power, destroys everything around it, it feeds on living beings and thanks to it the orcs arrive in there). So the only way to save Azeroth is fighting them all species together commanded by Lothar (Travis Fimmel) the best warrior of the king Llane Wrynn (Dominic Cooper).
I have never played Wow before, so I watched this film starting from scratch, everything was new for me. The world, the characters, the plot… And from that view I think the movie is quite good. I don’t know if it is a faithful copy of the video game but it has sense from the beginning to the end. Now, throughout the whole movie I couldn’t stop looking at Lothar in the eye and recognize Ragnar Lothbrook in him (travis Fimmel from Vikings), his looks and facial expressions are hard to forget.  Anyway, in the end, I liked very much.
I’d say it is 6,5.

Spotlight

Empezamos semana (un día más tarde que el resto) con una de las películas que más ganas tenía de ver puesto que se llevó el Oscar a mejor película este año. Efectivamente se trata de Spotlight dirigida por Thomas McCarthy y con un elenco de actores increíble entre los que podríamos destacar a Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams o Liev Schreiber.

Está basada en la investigación que un grupo de periodistas del Boston Globe realizó sobre los abusos cometidos por parte de miembros de la iglesia católica a menores en la ciudad de Boston (una ciudad mayoritariamente católica y con un alto índice de personas practicantes). A lo largo de la película asistimos a la pugna entre los periodistas que tratan de hallar la verdad en un tema particularmente escabroso e importante como es el abuso de menores y la Iglesia, siempre hermética, siempre intentando ocultar sus faltas (en este caso delitos) a toda costa.

No puedo negar que es una buena película, que trata uno de los asuntos más escabrosos y difíciles, máxime cuando son reales, los problemas de la Iglesia católica y los abusos sexuales. Sin embargo, soy de la opinión que el título de mejor película del año y el Oscar le quedan grandes… al menos a mí me han gustado más otras. Es una película correcta, con interpretaciones correctas pero en un tema que podrí haberse exprimido más las emociones, haber llegado más al espectador.

En definitiva, aun siendo una buena película, le falta algo. Y por eso la puntuación es un 7.

Let’s start this new week (one day later than everybody) with a movie which I have been wanting to watch for a while. It is the one who won the best film Oscar this year: Spotlight. It was directed by Thomas McCarthy. It also has a great cast which is composed by Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams or Live Schreiber among others.

The movie is based on true story about the research of a group of journalists who write in Boston Globe newspaper. They research the sexual abuses which were committed by members of the Catholic Church in the city of Boston (a city mainly catholic and with a high rate of churchgoer). As long as the movie keeps on going, we assist to the struggle between the journalists who want to know the whole truth and bring it to light (the sexual abuses by the Catholic Church is not a trivial matter) and the Church itself, always secretive, always hiding its faults and felonies no matter what.

I can’t deny it is a good film, and this issue is really controversial and harsh to address: the problems of the Church and the sexual abuses. I think that this movie hasn’t deserved the best film Oscar this year though. At least, in my opinion, I prefer other movies from this year than this. Of course it is a good movie, the plot is great but there is something left, emotion, impact whatever you want to call it.

In conclusion, even if I liked it, I was expecting something more. 

So it is “just” 7 for it. 

El diario de Noah/ The notebook

Parece que después de una larga temporada viendo películas de ciencia-ficción y miedo, vuelvo por fin al género del drama. Y la película de hoy es una de mis favoritas que ya he visto unas cuantas veces (no sabría decir muy bien cuántas). El diario de Noah. Aproveché para verla puesto que recientemente terminé de leer el libro como ya publiqué hace unas semanas.

El argumento viene a ser prácticamente el mismo, y la verdad que es una de las películas que más o menos respetan bastante el libro, por supuesto soy de la opinión que los libros suelen ser mejores que las películas, y en este caso se ha hecho una gran labor.

Para quienes no leyeron la reseña: cuenta la historia de amor de Noah Calhoun un joven de origen humilde y Allyson Nelson una chica procedente de familia acomodada durante un verano en el sur de Estados Unidos. Y cómo a pesar de la distancia, el tiempo, las convenciones sociales de aquella época y los azares de la vida, el amor, cuando es verdadero nunca se olvida. Esta historia está recogida en un cuaderno que un hombre le cuenta a una mujer enferma de demencia senil (en el libro es Alzheimer) cada día.

No es una superproducción de cine, y en ella vemos a dos jovencísimos Ryan Gosling y Rachel McAdams que interpretan genial sus papeles (la escena de la discusión junto al coche al volver Alli me parece simplemente increíble). Y pese a que ambos actores parece ser que durante ña filmación se llevaban terriblemente mal, en la película muestran una gran química. La historia es perfecta, sí, lo sé, algo ñoña e inverosímil, pero a mí me gusta y mucho.

Así que la valoro con un 7.75

It seems that after a looong season just watching sci-fi or horror movies, the time has come for dramas!!! The movie for today is one my favorite ones, and I actually has already watched like thousand times (well… maybe not so many but I couldn’t tell how many exactly). It is The notebook, and as I had read the book recently I said to myself, why not?

The plot is basically the same with slight differences. And it is truly well adapted in my opinion. But of course, it still prefer the book because I rather read a book than watch a film, but honestly, they did it so great this time.

For those who didn’t read my post: The notebook tells the love story between Noah Calhoun and Allie Nelson. He is a humble handsome boy; she is member of an important and rich family. They meet in a summer vacation of her to South with her family and they immediately fall in love with each other. But when the summer ends, she has to go back to her life in the city. But despite distance, time, social standards, and hazardous life they never forgot each other. Because, despite everything and everyone, a true love will never be forgotten. This is the story that a man reads to a woman who is sick from senility (in the book she suffers from Alzheimer) every single day.

The movie is simply amazing. We can see two very young Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams that gave extraordinary performances. I really like the scene when they argue next to the car when she’s back to town; it makes cry and laugh at the same time. I’ve heard many times that while they were filming this movie, they hated each other, yet they have special chemistry in front of the cameras. I really like this movie. It makes me cry a river every time I watch it.

I’d say it is 7,75. 

El indomable Will Hunting/ Good Will Hunting

Hoy traigo un película que casi tiene veinte años ya, y que pensaba que había visto hace tiempo pero en realidad no. La película de hoy es El indomable Will Hunting dirigida por Gus van Sant y cuyo guion es cosecha propia de Matt Damon y Ben Affleck ( he de reconocer que este último como actor no me gusta demasiado, pero como guionista o director hace cosas muy buenas e interesantes).

La película está ambientada en Boston, Estados Unidos. Will es un chico de veinte años que trabaja limpiando en el Instituto tecnológico de Masschusetts y cuyo mayor pasatiempo es estar con sus amigos de toda la vida. Pero Will no es como sus amigos, él tiene una inteligencia por encima de la media hasta tal punto que consigue descifrar sin dificultad un problema muy complejo en el edificio que trabaja. Cuando el profesor que planteó ese problema descubre que la persona que consiguió resolverlo es él tratará de ayudarlo puesto que sobre él puede caer una cadena de encarcelamiento. El profesor Lambeua (Stellan Skarsgård) pedirá ayuda a numerosos psiquiatras y terapeutas pero solo un viejo compañero de universidad Sean Maguire (Robbin Williams) logrará llegar al joven Will Hunting, hacer que hable y poder ayudarlo. Pero ahora Will debe tomar una decisión sobre su vida, aprovechar sus altas capacidades intelectuales en trabajos impensables hasta ese momento, seguir disfrutando de la vida sencilla junto a sus amigos de toda la vida o buscar a la joven de la que se ha enamorado al otro lado del país.

Es increíble como una película tan sencilla puede llegarte tanto. No tiene grandes dosis de acción, muchos escenarios asombrosos, ni efectos especiales, solo es un gran guion y un elenco de actores increíbles que saben transmitir e interpretar sus papeles de una manera asombrosa ( las escenas entre Robbin Williams y Matt Damon son simplemente geniales). Un claro ejemplo de que a veces, menos es más. Lo más curioso es que pensaba que la había visto pero no, porque Will Hunting es una de esas películas que una vez que la ves, no puedes la puedes olvidar.

La voy a valorar con un 7,75. 

Today I’m reviewing a movie from almost twenty years ago. I thought that I had already watched it but I was wrong. The movie is Good Will Hunting directed by Gus van Sant and whose script was written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck (I don’t like this one at all but I have to admit that he is so great as scriptwriter and director).

The movie is set on Boston where Will (Matt Damon) a guy in his early twenties works cleaning the Technologic Institute of Massachusetts. What he really enjoys the most is having fun with his friends, although he is not like them, his brain is special, he’s very clever. He is so clever than he is able to resolve a difficult problem which had been set out in the place where he works. When the professor Lambeau (Stellan Skarsgård) finds out that it was him who has resolved, immediately asks for help to many psychologists and therapists. But among all, just one will be able to help him, an old friend from their times at University, Sean Maguire (Robbin Williams). Sean is the only one who makes him talk and who gets along well with him. But Will has to make an important choice: using his high skills to get a good job, keep having fun with his friends or driving to the other part of the country to meet the girl he has fallen in love with.

Nowadays it looks unbelievable that a movie without much action, many different and beautiful sceneries, or high doses of special effects could success. But Good Will Hunting doest it. It's just very simple, very touching, very good. It just has a great script, (very great indeed), an incredible good cast (especially when the psychologist and Will have their meetings), and an a good plot. The best example of sometimes less is more. The curious thing about it is that I told you before; I thought that I had already watched it, but this was my mistake. Because a film like this is unforgettable.

I liked it much so it is 7,75. 

Star Trek and Star Trek into darkness

El fin de semana pasado aproveché para ver un par de películas de esas que prácticamente todo el mundo o ha visto o conoce. A mí me sonaba que habían estrenado Star Trek en algún momento pero no sabía exactamente cuándo ni mucho menos que había dos películas y la tercera en camino para este año. Lo gracioso es que en vez de ver primero la uno y luego la dos, las vi al revés.

Ambas películas Star Trek (2009) y Star Trek en la oscuridad (2013) están dirigidas por J.J Abrams. Tiberio James Kirk (Chris Pine) es un joven, huérfano de padre, talentoso e inteligente pero muy problemático y temerario. Todo lo contrario a Spok (Zachary Quinto), mitad humano mitad vulcaniano. A pesar de sus naturalezas tan opuestas, están obligados a trabajar juntos en el primer viaje de la nave estelar Enterprise, con la no fácil tarea de salvar a la humanidad de un terrible enemigo, Nero que amenaza con destruir la humanidad a modo de venganza tras haber sido destruido su propio planeta con lo que en él había.

Asistimos al primer viaje de esta nave tan emblemática y conocemos al gran equipo que forman todos juntos, incluido el ingeniero Soctty que no era miembro de la tripulación oficial en esta primera misión.

En la segunda entrega, un nuevo desastre amenaza con destruir todo por lo que han luchado los pasajeros de la Enterprise. En este caso un ataque directo a la Federación. El responsable es el enemigo más fuerte y difícil de destruir de cuantos han visto hasta el momento. Tan difícil que pondrá a prueba todo lo que Kirk, Spock  y sus compañeros han logrado juntos hasta el momento, incluida su amistad. Los personajes siguen siendo interpretados por los mismos actores y el archienemigo es un malísimo Benedict Cumberbatch que nos ofrece una maravillosa interpretación de villano.  

No soy muy fan de Star Trek, de hecho este es mi primer acercamiento puesto que no había visto la serie tampoco y lo cierto es que me agradó bastante. No puedo juzgar con respecto a las originales pero sí con otras películas del género, y salen bastante bien paradas. Quizás la segunda me ha gustado más, tiene  más acción, no necesita tanta introducción de personajes puesto que se supone que ya los conocemos (aunque como yo la vi primero, necesité de varias explicaciones).

Para la primera va ser un 6,75.

Y para la segunda un 7 para marcar esa diferencia con la primera de la que os hablo.

Last weekend I had some free time so I could watch a couple of those movies which everybody has already watched or at least, know. I’d heard of them, although I didn’t have a clue about the two new Star Trek movies, actually I thought there was just one! And the third is coming this year! The funny thing is that despite this, I watched the second part firstly and then, the first one.

Both movies, Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek into Darkness (2013) are directed by J.J Abram so do the next one. Tiberius J. Kirk (Chris Pine) is a young guy, fatherless, talented and intelligent but also troublemaker and bold. He’s just the opposite of Spok (Zachary Quinto), half human, half vulcanian. Despite of their different natures, they’re forced to work together to save the world in the first journey of the stellar ship The Enterprise. Nero is a terrible enemy who wants to destroy everyone and everything because of his desire for vengeance.

We assist to first journey of this famous ship and we first know the crew in it, Scotty included who was not member of the official crew.

In the second part, a new disaster is threating to destroy the Earth, or at least, The Federation. This new enemy is probably the worst they have ever fought against. So hard is going to be for them to combat him that he’s going to attempt to bring down everything the crew has already achieved, including their trust and friendship. The crew is performed by same actors and actresses and this new villain is played by Benedict Cumberbatch who gives an incredible performance (and I’m not very fan of him).

This was my first approaching to Star Trek, I had never watched the original movies or the TV show, and I liked it. It is true that I cannot judge based on anything about the old Star Trek shows, but based on other science fiction films, this is great. I’d rather the second one than the first, it doesn’t need an introduction of the characters and it goes straight to the point (though I needed some extra explanations because I watched it in first place).

So the first one is 6,75

And the second one 7 to make that difference I’ve told.

Miss you already

Sigo poniéndome al día con las películas vistas durante las dos últimas semanas. Y por fin cambio de género para adentrarme en una comedia dramática, o drama cómico, no sabría bien catalogarlo.

Se trata de la película Miss you already dirigida por Catherine Hardwicke, estrenada en 2015. En ella se cuenta la historia de dos amigas de la infancia. Vemos como ambas han compartido siempre todo, han hablado sin tapujos, se han apoyado y ayudado sin condición. Milly (tony Collette) es atrevida, vividora, exitosa, cabezota, y una enamorada de sus hijos y su esposo. Jess (Drew Barrymore) es su mejor amiga y todo lo contrario a Milly Ambas son la noche y el día pero sus diferencias las acercan, complementándose de una forma que solo dos mejores amigas saben. Pero todo cambia cuando a Milly le diagnostican una  terrible enfermedad y Jess logra quedarse embarazada.

Sin duda ha sido una sorpresa esta película. Sin saber de qué iba empecé a verla y al acabarla había derramado casi dos litros en lágrimas. Sé que el tema del cáncer me toca de cerca y eso me hace especialmente sensible, pero aun así, hay momentos graciosos, llenos de luz y de vida que triunfan sobre ese sabor de agonía y tristeza que deja el cáncer. Creo que Toni Collete está fantástica en este papel.

Le doy un 6,25.

I’m still catching up with the movies I have seen the past two weeks. And finally I’m reviewing a movie from another genre!!! It’s a dramatic comedy or a comedic drama I don’t know very well how it should be catalogued.

The movie is Miss you already directed by Catherine Hardwicke and released in 2015. It is set on London. Two best friends have shared all their lives together, have talked openly to each other; they have supported and also helped no matter what. Milly, (Toni Collette) is adventurous, successful, and stubborn and devoted mother and wife. Jess (Drew Barrymore) is her best friend and quite the contrary. They both are like the night and the day. But their differences make them stronger and get them closer. They fit together in a way that just two BF can do. But everything will change when Milly is diagnosed a terrible disease and Jess will be pregnant for the first time.

Doubtlessly this movie was quite a surprise to me. I hadn’t heard of it, and I didn’t know what the plot was about, and by the end of it I had cried two thousands of tears already. Still there are some good funny moments that make you laugh and breathe so you can resist all the agony and sadness about it. It is very touching, inspiring and cathartic as well. I think Toni Collette gives an extraordinary performance.

It Is 6,25. 

Los elegidos / Dark Skies

Hoy de nuevo me toca comentar una película del género de terror, aunque más bien es un híbrido entre terror y ciencia ficción. La película en cuestión se llama Los elegidos y está dirigida por Scott Stewart.

El matrimonio Barret (Kerri Russel y Josh Hamilton) viven en una casa normal en un barrio tranquilo junto a sus dos hijos. Pero de repente, comienzan a suceder cosas extrañas en ella, ruidos, alarmas que se activan sin motivo aparente, extraños diseños creados a partir de utensilios de cocina, pájaros que se estrellan contra su casa. A pesar de todos estos extraños acontecimientos nadie es capaz de darles una explicación lógica, salvo alguien que podría tener una respuesta. Tal vez la causa no sea humana, ni siquiera terrestre, quizá los Barret hayan sido elegidos para algo que no desearían haberlo sido y deberán luchar contra algo que se escapa de su propio conocimiento.

Sigo pensando lo mismo que dije ayer y cada vez que veo películas de miedo/terror… necesitamos un poco de aire fresco. Si no son fantasmas, son presencias sobrenaturales, o posesiones o si no, en última instancia, extraterrestres. Nihil novum sub solem como dirían mis queridos romanos… con tintes a Expediente X, Señales o Poltergeist, no es que haya sido mala, de ello tiene  varios sustos eficaces y la trama y las interpretaciones no son malas, pero carece tampoco es esa bocana de aire fresco que encarecidamente pico a este género.

Un aprobado justito, pero aprobado al fin y al cabo así que un 5.

Today I’m reviewing a horror film again or a hybrid between horror and science fiction though. The movie itself is Dark skies directed by Scott Stewart.

The Barret ( Kerri Russel and Josh Hamilton) are a marriage who live in a normal house in a quiet neighborhood with their two sons. But suddenly, strange things happen in there: noises, alarms sounding for no reason, rare designs made with different utensils from the house and even birds which crash against their house. Despite of these facts, nobody is able to explain why these things are happening to them, but an old man who has already lived something similar. He explains that they may be chosen, and everything they are suffering is not coming for human forces, not even terrestrial so they have to fight against something they don’t know, but the only way to survive, is by doing it all together.

I’m still thinking what I said yesterday, this genre or this type of films need some fresh air. Ghosts, paranormal activities, evil possessions or aliens… as my dear Romans would say: nihil novum sub solem. It wasn’t bad at all, in fact there are some good scares and the plot wasn’t that bad either. Sometimes it reminded me some other movies just like Poltergeist, Signs and even The X-files.

Anyway it passed, but just passed, so it’s 5/10. 

El efecto Lázaro / The Lazarus effect

Otra vez lunes, y vuelve a ser una semana llena de películas que comentar. Aún voy con retraso y acumulando nombres a la lista pero espero ponerme más o menos al día esta semana.

Esta película se titula El efecto lázaro y está dirigida por David Gelb. Trata sobre un grupo de científicos que están desarrollando  un experimento que sería capaz de devolver a un muerto a la vida. Consiguen hacerlo en primer lugar con un perro, pero este comienza a tener comportamientos agresivos y extraños a su vuelta a la vida. Al mismo tiempo les comunican que el laboratorio será cerrado y todo lo que hasta ese momento habían estudiado pasará a otras manos. Antes de que eso ocurra, el grupo volverá al laboratorio para realizar de nuevo el experimento Lázaro y guardarlo para sí, pero algo sale mal, y acabarán por realizar el experimento con uno de sus propios compañeros. Los efectos secundarios del experimento que el perro sufrió parecen haberse multiplicado en el ser humano, generando no solo una terrible agresividad si no una fuerza y control mental inauditos hasta ese momento.

El principio de la película tiene elementos muy buenos y bien planteados para esperar algo nuevo y diferente en este género. Pero es solo un espejismo porque a medida que la película avanza, los clichés vuelven y la historia se repite, sabiendo perfectamente cómo se van a desarrollar los acontecimientos. Todo lo que al principio parecía un soplo de aire fresco en un género que realmente necesita de ella, acaba por ser, otra vez, más de lo mismo. Ni siquiera Olivia Wilde, Mark Duplass o Evan Peters logran mejorarla.

Un 4 para ella.

It’s Monday again, and this week is full of movies to review . I’m delayed and I’m accumulating more films but I’ll catch up more or less in the coming days.

This movie I’m bringing today is The Lazarus effect, directed by David Gelb. A group of scientists are developing an experiment which revives a corpse from the death. They’ve already experimented with a dog, and this was able to live again but certainly its behavior has changed and he’s more aggressive and dangerous. By the same time, they are told that the laboratory is closing and everything they are working for is now in other hands, especially the Lazarus experiment.   So before that happens they go back to the lab and try to keep their experiment by doing it again. However, something is wrong and they’ll have to do it with one of them. The secondary effects in human are even worse than in dogs so she develops and extraordinary strength and an unprecedented mind control.

When I pushed the start bottom I thought I was gonna watch something different, and I certainly thought so for the first thirty minutes. But that was just an illusion, because as long as the movie moves forward, you realize there is nothing new at all, the same clichés, the plot is just the same and you already know what is going to happen in the second part of the movie. So, all the good I was expecting in the beginning turns out to be just the same old story again. It was quite disappointing by the way, because I really think that this genre needs some fresh air. Olivia Wilde, Evan Peters or Mark Duplass weren’t even able to make it any better.

It’s 4 for it. 

Drácula la leyenda jamás contada / Dracula untold

Casi in extremis, pero llego para subir este post sobre otra de las películas. En este caso llega el turno de Drácula, la leyenda jamás contada, dirigida por Gary Shore y estrenada en el 2014.

La película narra una nueva versión sobre el famoso príncipe de Rumanía Vlad Tepes ( Luke Evans) que inspiró a Bram Stoker para escribir el archifamoso Drácula. En una cueva dentro de la zona en la que el príncipe gobierna cuenta la leyenda que se esconde un terrible ser. Vlad ha sido el único que se ha introducido en ella y ha sobrevivido. Al mismo tiempo que esto ocurre, el sultán del imperio Otomano ordena la entrega de un millar de niños en Rumanía, incluido el hijo del príncipe. Pero el príncipe Vlad no permitirá que esto ocurra y para ello hará un pacto con el ser que se encuentra en la cueva: este contará con el poder de un vampiro durante tres días siempre y cuando no beba sangre humana. Si sucumbe a la tentación, estará condenado eternamente a permanecer en la forma de ese terrible ser.

Lo cierto es que no soy muy fan de Drácula y ni siquiera conocía esta película antes de verla. Sin ser nada del otro mundo tampoco resulta demasiado terrible de ver ni demasiado aburrida. Se trata de un Drácula muy humano y familiar que el pueblo respeta. En el momento en el pacta con el diablo, en este caso ese vampiro interpretado por Charles Dance, Vlad se vuelve un superhéroe, super fuerza, super rapidez, super todo. Pero sin duda el momento álgido de la película está en las secuencias finales, nótese aquí la ironía:

-          La muerte de la mujer del príncipe ( en ese momento super Drácula no logra encontrar la super rapidez para salvar a su mujer)

-          En la actualidad el actual Vlad, se encuentra con una ¿reencarnación? De su antigua esposa a la cual intenta ligarse de una manera un tanto particular.

Creo que si no llega a ser por esos momentos finales que no tienen mucho sentido para mí, le hubiera dado incluso un 5. Pero el ataque de risa e incomprensión la llevan al 4,5.

I’m in a run out of time today but I’ll post about another movie anyway. In this very case I’m reviewing Dracula Untold, directed by Gary Shore and released on 2014.

The film is set on Romania and we can watch a new version of the famous prince of Romania Vlad Tepes (played by Luke Evans). This prince is the one who inspired Bram Stoker to write his famous novel “Dracula”. It is said that in a cave in that region where Vlad rules there is a terrible monster. The prince is the only one who has been inside and survived. In the meantime, the sultan of the Ottoman Empire orders to hand over a thousand of children from Romania, the son of the prince included. Blad is not allowing and starts a war against the sultan instead. So he will deal with that diabolic being: the prince will have all his power during three whole days but he won’t drink blood under any circumstance. If he is not able to resist, he will turn into a vampire for the rest of the eternity.

The truth is I’m not very fond of Dracula and I hadn’t heard from this movie before. Still, it is nothing special, but it is not tedious or hideous though. We can see a very human Dracula who cares about his own family and people and who is respected. When he makes this pact with that monster, performed by Charles Dance, Vlad becomes a superhero, with super strength, and super speed among other superpowers. But doubtlessly the best was yet to come, please note here the irony:

-          His super speed does not work when he tries to save his wife. But even if she has fallen from a large distance, she survived and the only thing that Vlad could do was to bite her, seriously?

-          Last scene, he appears in what seems to be a current time or so and he sees a woman who looks exactly like his wife, the one who had bitten. And he tries to seduce her in a really really strange way.

There are also some other strange things at the end of it so even if I wanted to mark it as 5, I can’t for those terrible last moments, so sadly it is just a 4,5.  

Capitán Phillips / Captain Phillips

Sigo poniéndome al día con todas las películas de la semana pasada. Hoy le toca el turno a una película del 2013 y dirigida por Paul Greengrass: Capitán Philips.

Richard Philips, Tom Hanks, es un capitán estadounidense que debe transportar el buque Maersk Alabama desde Omán hasta Mombasa, Kenia pasando por el cuerno de África, una franja marítima azotada por piratas somalíes tal y como se ha alertado. Durante la simulación de un posible ataque, descubren que están siendo seguidos y aunque la primera vez logran esquivarlos, los piratas volverán a intentar abordarlos una segunda vez con más éxito y un grupo de somalíes tomarán el control del buque. Pero la inteligencia y astucia del capitán y la buena preparación de la tripulación permitirán revertir la situación y lleguen a un acuerdo para que los piratas abandonen el barco en un bote salvavidas. Pero se llevarán sin embargo al capitán como rehén.

Recuerdo perfectamente aquellos días en los que en las noticias no dejaban de anunciar la presencia de piratas en África y me imaginaba barcos piratas con banderas de calaveras…  nada que ver. Es una película interesante que te engancha desde el primer momento y no pierde el ritmo. Además el hecho de contar con Tom Hanks como protagonista hace mucho, ¡qué gran actor me parece! También creo que los actores que interpretan a los piratas están muy bien logrados cada a uno con una personalidad clara y marcada que reflejan lo que son, no los piratas expertos que todos tenemos en mente, sino piratas por necesidad.

Le doy un 7.

I keep catching up with all movies I had watched last week. Today the turn is for a movie from 2013 and directed by Paul Greengrass: Captain Phillips.

Richard Phillips, performanced by the magnificent Tom Hanks, is an American captain who has to transport the Maersk Alabama ship from Oman to Mombasa, Kenia. In their journey, he and the crew are going through the Horn of Africa, a dangerous place hit by Somali pirates. During a simulation, the captain discovers what it looks like a group of these pirates. And even if he and his crew make them go away the first time the pirates try to attack them, they return for a second chance and this time they succeeded so the pirates take control of the ship. However, because of the intelligence and cleverness of the captain and the good preparation of the crew, the situation will be reversed. The pirates will be forced to leave the ship but in their leaving the captain will be taken as hostage.

I remember crystal clear those days in which the news was talking about pirates in Africa all the time and I imagined pirate ships with their flags of skull… this had nothing to do with the reality though. Still, it is a very interesting movie and from the first moment it keeps you on the edge of your seat. Besides, counting on Tom Hanks as main actor is such a good bet!!! I really really like him! Although I can’t undervalue the good performances of the pirates, well done for them as well because everyone has his own personality and they reflect what they are, not the expert pirates we all have in mind but pirates out of necessity.  

So let’s say it is 7. 

Sufragistas/ Suffragette

Una semana nueva que viene cargada de películas, aunque la mayoría todavía siguen siendo de la semana pasada… así que empiezo con Sufragistas, una película dirigida por Sarah Gavron.

La película está ambientada en el Londres antes de la Primera Guerra Mundial, donde surgió el movimiento que da nombre a la película. Maud Watts (Carey Mulligan) es una joven esposa y madre de familia que ha nacido y crecido en el arduo oficio de la lavandería y que ha visto y sufrido los abusos de su jefe. Poco a poco se adentra cada vez más en el movimiento denominado sufragistas que encabeza Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep) y que en esa parte de Londres organiza Edith Ellyn (Helena Bonham Carter).  Cuanto más se adentra Maud en el movimiento, este más se radicaliza y su marido más la desprecia hasta que termina por repudiarla y alejarla de su hijo al cual, entrega en adopción. La única solución para Maud y para las mujeres del movimiento es seguir luchando y arriesgarlo todo aunque en el camino, algunas no estarán dispuestas.

Sin ser una película tremendamente ostentosa, tiene algo que atrae. El tema es importante y la lucha por la igualdad continua aún activa hoy en día. Las mujeres ya no pelean ni se rebelan por votar, pero la igualdad total aún no se ha conseguido. La interpretación de Carey Mulligan es buena, la verdad es que la actriz tiene cierta aura de nostalgia y tristeza que la hacen ideal para el papel de mujer atrapada entre el amor a su familia y la sensación de deber ante las igualdades sufridas. Una pena que Meryl Streep solo aparezca unos minutos con lo genial que es…. Y me encanta ver a  Helena Bonham Carter en un papel serio y magnífico como este.

En cualquier caso creo que es una película diferente, que toca un tema todavía hoy escabroso y lo hace de una manera digna y sobresaliente desde el prisma de una mujer humilde del pobre West End londinense.

Le doy un 7

This new week is full of movies again, the most part of them are from the last week though. So I won’t delay this moment any longer and I’m starting with Suffragette, directed by Sarah Gavron.

The movie is set in London just before the First World War where the movement which named this movie emerged. Maud Watts (Carey Mulligan) is a young wife and mother who was born and raised in a laundry and who has seen and suffered abuses from his boss all her life. She knew the suffragette movement one day by chance and slowly she stars to get involved in it. The mastermind of it is Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep) who is running away from the authorities, but in the West End where Maud lives, this movement is organized by Edith Ellyn (Helena Bonham Carter). As long as she gets more involved, they are becoming more and more radicalized which is going to make a split between her and her husband, and as a result, he repudiates her and obliges her to stay away from her son because she has no rights over him. So the only way to take her son back is to keep fighting even hardly and risking everything.

It is not a sumptuous movie, and its simplicity makes an impact on the spectator. The main topic is very important nowadays yet. Maybe women are not fighting for their votes, but still fighting for the same rights, we are closer now than then, but the fight is still ongoing. The performance of Carey Mulligan is magnificent, she has this nostalgic and sad halo which makes her perfect for this role of a woman trapped between her love for her family and her duties as woman hurt by a world ruled by men. Such a pity that Meryl Streep just appears five minutes or so… but I love seeing Helena Bonham Carter in a serious role.

Anyway I think it is a different movie with a very important topic. The director represents the story with dignity from the perspective of a humble woman from the West End in London.

It’s 7 this time. 

Capitán América: Civil War / Captain America: Civil war

Hoy en teoría debería hacer el comentario de la película que vi el pasado jueves en la sesión semanal de cine de jueves noche pero, como el martes fui al cine, aprovecho para comentar la película del martes. Lo primero, adoro ir al cine, creo que cualquier película, por mala que sea, en el cine es cien veces mejor. Quizás sea una cuestión de imagen, de ambiente, aunque sin duda, para mí lo mejor es el sonido. Vivo cualquier película, pero en el cine, más aún.

La película que fui a ver fie Capitán América: Civil War. Dirigida por los hermanos Russo (que ya habían dirigida Capitán América: El soldado de invierno). Tras un incidente en Nigeria de repercusión internacional con daño civil en el que los Vengadores estaban involucrados, los altos mandatarios de los principales países miembros de la ONU deciden que el grupo de superhéroes deben ser controlados y actuar bajo sus órdenes. Pero no todos los Vengadores están de acuerdo con la ratificación de ese acuerdo, lo que les lleva a una escisión en dos bandos mientras deben luchar todavía contra un enemigo que atenta con destruirlos a todos.

Sin duda, de todas las películas que he visto sobre Capitán América es la que más me ha gustado. Y aunque mi vengador favorito es Thor, en esta película, me alío en el bando de Capitán América. Una de las cosas que más me gustan de estas películas es la conexión con los demás personajes de Marvel, y en esta película esa labor es magnífica. Sin olvidar quién es el protagonista todos tienen su sitio en la trama, incluso la introducción de Spider Man o Black Panther. Por contrapunto, y como detalle que no me gustó, en una película donde se cambia de escenario tantas veces, las letras gigantes cada vez que aparece un nuevo escenario, por favor, no gracias. Es cierto que no va a ser una película que nos haga replantearnos la vida, pero ¿acaso una película de superhéroes busca eso? No, ¿verdad? Su labor es entretener, y entretiene.

Así que un 7 para ella.

Even though today I should review the movie I had watched last Thursday in my weekly cinema session at night, I am reviewing another one instead. Just because I went on cinema on Tuesday, the movie deserves it. Firstly I have to admit that I do love going to the cinema. I truly believe that a movie is hundred times better when you watch it in there. Maybe it is so just because of the light, the screen, the environment, but for me, the best is the sound though. I get emotional with every single movie, but in the cinema, even more.

So, what I watched was Captain America: Civil War. It was directed by the Russo brothers who had already directed Captain America: the winter soldier. After an incident in Nigeria which had an international impact and civil damage and in which the Avengers were involved, high representative of all over the world decide that the group of superheroes should be controlled and acted under their orders. But in such a situation, not every one of them agrees. So this is going to create a split, and in the meantime a new enemy attempts to destroy every one.

Doubtlessly this is my favorite movie about Captain America ‘till now. Though, my favorite Avenger is Thor, in this very movie, I’m positioned on Captain Team, because if I were one of them, I would do what he does in it. One of the things that I liked the most is how all the characters have their place in the storyline and yet, you can understand why the movie is called Captain America instead of Avengers. It was very great watching Black Panther and Spider Man among them for the very first time.

However, on the other hand, and just to say something I don’t like much. In a film which has lots of sets and sceneries it is pretty disgusting those big letters every time we see a new one, for me that was quite annoying.

This is not a movie that is going to make you open-minded and it’s not going to the change your life at all, and it doesn’t pretend to be that kind of movies either. It will try to entertain you, and in my case, it did, very well indeed.

So my score is 7. 

Joy

Por fin acabo con las películas que debí haber comentado la semana pasada… en este caso se trata de Joy. Llevaba tiempo con ganas de verla puesto que estuvo nominada a los Oscar en varios apartados pero no pude verla hasta ahora.

Joy es una película dirigida por David O. Russel y protagonizada por el tándem de actores Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence junto con Robert de Niro entre otros (sí, otra vez este trío en una película nominada a los Oscar…). Es un biopic sobre Joy Mongano, una joven madre de Long Island que debe hacerse cargo de una familia bastante desestructurada de Long Island. Su increíble talento e ingenio se vieron frustrados a una edad muy temprana debido al divorcio de sus padres. Pero siempre continuó latente, hecho que se demostró cuando creó una fregona que revolucionaría el mundo de la limpieza hasta ese momento. Pero el camino no fue fácil, y tuvo que superar el fracaso, las deudas, y el que nadie quisiera su producto hasta el punto de que fue ella misma quien logró venderlo en la televisión, tras un intento fallido. Joy logra finalmente convertirse en la mujer de éxito que su abuela había dicho que llegaría a ser, pero el camino al éxito nunca fue fácil.

De Joy me gusta la propia historia de la protagonista. Creo que es algo nuevo y diferente (no estoy muy puesta en el mundo de la teletienda ni de los negocios americanos, así que esa parte me resultó bastante interesante). Y aunque la interpretación de Jennifer Lawrence una vez más es magistral, el resto de personajes pese a ser grandes actores, es como si apenas tuvieran peso, es como si solo fueran teloneros de la verdadera estrella, Joy. Además, hay momentos bastante inverísimiles, y aquí no voy a mencionar que en ningún momento queda claro si los hijos que tiene son tres, dos, uno o ninguno, porque en cada escena de familia, algo no cuadra. Pero vamos, además de ese pequeño detalle, creo que nadie en su sano jucio escurriría la fregona llena de cristales con la mano, o que del baño de una empresa llegues a la zona de trabajo por una puerta que sin haber estado jamás en la fábrica, sabías que estaba ahí…

En cualquier caso, es pasable y me gusta cómo trabaja Jennifer Lawrence ( si no te gusta, mejor que no la veas..) mi nota es 6.

Finally I’m finishing the movies which I should have reviewed last week… so in this very case I’m going to talk about Joy. I really wanted to watch it because it was nominee to the Oscar’s and I like watching those movies.

Joy was directed by David O. Russel and its main characters are (once again) Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper or Robert de Niro among others. The movie is a biopic about Joy Mongano, a young mother from Long Island who is in charge of the whole family (her mother, and ex-husband included). Her incredible talent and inventiveness were frustrated when she was just a child because of their parents’ divorce. But these abilities had been hidden inside her, and she used them again in order to create a new mop which was going to change the lives of many people in the world. But it was not easy for her to be successful. She had to get over failing, debts, and that nobody and no company support her product. So she finally had to sell it herself on TV.  Eventually she became into a successful business woman which her grandmother had told her when she was only a child.

From this movie I like the plot itself. Maybe it is not quite interesting but certainly is something different and originality is something I start appreciating in a movie. The performance of Jennifer Lawrence is once again magnificent but I missed the rest of characters. I mean, they are just there because Jennifer Lawrence had to have someone around; I would like them to have more impact on the movie. Besides, there are some moments they seemed to me pretty unlikely or failing: for example I’m not sure about the role of mother of Joy, actually I don’t even know whether she had three children, two, one or none, it was like nobody was taken care of them. Anyway, I don’t think that someone who is dripping a mop full of crystals uses her hands either. Or when you just come in a new building and you ask to go the toilets you perfectly already knew that there is a door which takes you to the very place you wanted to go firstly, really is she that brilliant?

Anyway, it is enjoyable and I always like how Jennifer Lawrence plays her roles, (if you don’t, don’t watch it) so it is going to be 6.

Macbeth

Este fin de semana me he puesto las pilas viendo películas así que creo que tengo para comentar durante una buena temporada porque además, todavía tenía un par pendientes de la semana anterior. Así que vamos al lío.

Esta semana empiezo con una obra clásica del gran William Shakespeare que llevaba tiempo con ganas de ver pero no encontraba en ninguna parte, Macbeth. Lo cierto es que todavía no he leído la obra (no me gusta leer antes de ver para no decepcionarme). Para aquellos que no sepan de que va la obra una breve sinopsis. Macbeth es un gran guerrero al servicio del rey de Escocia que volviendo victorioso de un combate se encuentra con unas brujas que le profetizan que alcanzará grandes títulos incluido el de rey de Escocia, pero también, que su compañero  y amigo junto a él en este encuentro será ascendente de reyes. Macbeth, a su regreso a casa le cuenta el extraño mensaje a su mujer.  Y esta, atraída por su cumplimiento, logra convencer al propio Macbeth a cometer regicidio en una visita que este realiza al condado de Macbeth. Pero las manos manchadas de sangre por el delito cometido volverán a Macbeth no solo rey, sino también lo harán inestable y obsesionado porque la segunda parte de la profecía, la de que los hijos de otro serán quienes heredarán el trono puesto que Hamlet no tiene descendencia. Dirigida Justin Kurzel cuenta con actores de la talla de Michael Fassbender o Marion Cotillard entre sus personajes principales.

Es una película difícil de describir. Podría ser un intento de Macbeth épico con muchas batallas y mucha sangre, pero se queda a medio camino. Podría ser hasta un drama introspectivo en la figura de Macbeth, del éxito a la locura en 120 minutos, pero tampoco. Y podría ser un largometraje donde recrearse en las imágenes, los paisajes, la luz (o carencia de ella) y la música, pero tampoco llegar a serlo del todo. Le falta un poco de todo, aunque las interpretaciones son majestuosas, sobre todo Marion Cotillard, las imágenes y el juego de luces es bueno, la música encaja con el ritmo de la película… pero le falta algo, ¿dramatismo? ¿Continuación entre escenas? ¿un poco de todo? No sé, te deja con una sensación de estar a medias, y por solo le doy un 5,5.

Last weekend I kept myself update watching films, so I will have lots of them to review for a while. Besides, I already had couple of them from last week. Let’s go then.

This week I start with a classic from the Great William Shakespeare, Macbeth which I was wanting to watch it for a while but I didn’t find it anywhere. The truth is that I have not read the book yet, ( I don’t like reading previously in order not to be disappointed). For those who don’t know, here’s the synopsis.  Macbeth is a great warrior and honorable Scottish Earl who on his way back home is intercepted by a group of witches. They predict that he will have honorable titles such as King of Scotland but also, a friend of his who is with him at that moment is predicted to be father of a new dynasty of kings. Macbeth, confused, tells this strange meeting to his wife. And she, attracted by its fulfilment, persuades his husband, Macbeth, to commit regicide. But the hands stained with blood will make him not only king, but an unstable and mad one. And pursuing and killing his possible heirs will be his only duty in command. It has been directed by Justin Kurzel and it counts on such important actors and actresses as Michael Fassbender performing Macbeth and Marion Cotillars as his wife.

Truly, I can’t describe this move. It could have been an effort of an epic Macbeth with many battles and much blood, but it wasn’t that finally. It could have been an introspective drama about Macbeth, his rise, madness and decay in only 120 minutes, but it wasn’t that either. And it could have been a full-length film where we could enjoy its images, landscapes, music or light (or lack of it sometimes), but it wasn’t eventually. It’s a bit of everything and none at the same time. I really like Marion Cotillard though, she played a great role. But I still miss something in it, dramatism? Continuation between scenes? A bit of everything? Could be, I don’t know. When you finish the movie you feel there is something missing, so, my score it is just 5,5.
