Whiplash

Semana nueva, película nueva. Después de la semana santa empezamos con una película que entre el 2014 y el 2015 obtuvo muy buenas críticas y se hizo bastante famosa. Se trata de de Whiplash del director Damien Chazelle.

Whiplash es una película en la que la música no es el tema principal, sino la esencia de la propia película. Andrew Newman interpretado por Miles Teller es un joven estudiante de música en una de las academias más prestigiosas de Estados Unidos. Andrew sueña con la grandeza y el éxito con su batería. Y cuando en su camino se encuentra el excéntrico profesor de la mejor banda de jazz del conservatorio, Terence Fletcher, su forma de ser y su manera de impartir clase harán mella en el joven estudiante. De la ambición a la obsesión hay un pequeño paso y darlo es muy peligroso.

Es una película bastante entretenida y dinámica. J.K Simmons está soberbio en su papel de profesor obsesionado con la perfección. No soy una experta en el tema del jazz pero siempre había escuchado que la libertad en las partituras y la improvisación eran la esencia de este estilo. Y aquí no se dan ninguna de las dos cosas, creo que es un fallo bastante importante en la película ni siquiera perdonable por la actitud casi marcial del profesor. El final me dejó un poco con interrogantes, pero de todos modos está bastante bien.

New week, new movie. After Easter, let’s start with a movie which succeeded between 2014 and 2015, it was very famous and well criticized as well. This movie is Whiplash directed by Damien Chazelle.

Whiplash is not a musical or a film whose main theme is music, Whiplash is music itself from the very beginning to the end. Andrew Newman, played by Miles Teller, is a young student of music in a highly prestigious school of music of United States. Andrew dreams about highness and success playing drums. And when he meets Terence Fletcher, one of the most famous and renowned teachers in his school, his way of teaching and his nature will make a huge impression on Andrew. From ambition to obsession there is a tiny line, and crossing it could be very dangerous.

It is a good movie and quite entertain and dynamic. J.K Simmons is awesome performing this role of obsessive professor. Even though I am barely knowledgeable in music I have always listened to people saying that jazz is about free style, improvisation, and that jazz players don’t depend on sheet music at all. So I think this is a huge mistake when we are watching a jazz band performing all the time following by sheet music over and over. This is not justified not even because of Fletcher’s obsession with perfection. I didn’t like much the end but the rest of it was OK though.
